Sir Milo Butler statue is a tribute to Dr. Milo B Butler, a prominent politician in the Bahamas who’s life and accomplishments are all but forgotten in todays Bahamian society.

Its good to note that such a figure accomplished so much in the Bahamas that he was immortalized with a commemorate statue directly across from the Statue of Queen Victoria in the center of Downtown Nassau.

This is no small feat and virtually unheard of back when it was erected. There are many small unknown facts about Sir Butler himself as well as the history of the statue, lets explore a few of them.

Life of Sir Milo Butler?

Did you know that Sir Milo Butler was born in in the city of Nassau on 11 August 1906? His fathers name was George Raleigh Butler and his mothers name was called Frances.

Milo Butler attended the school int Rum Cay and the Boys’ Central School in Nassau but not known to many is that he also attended George Washington School in Florida

Did you know that Milo Butler started his own grocery business at the age 17? Again something that was not technically unheard of but a great step.

Mr Butler got married to a resident of Long Island called Caroline Loretta Watson Together they had 10 children, seven sons and three daughters.

An unknown fact about the bust of sir Milo Butler is that it weighs 375lbs by its self and with its stone pedestal clocks in at over 550lbs?

Did you know that the bust of sir Milo Butler is made of an alloy of 85% copper 5% tin 5% zinc and 5% lead, this is known as gun metal or red brass. Because of its make up the red brass will oxidize and will result in the greenish look called bronze patina.

Did you know that the statue is actually hollow, and about 1/2 inch thick? It was made by Randolph W Johnson in Little Harbour Abaco and put in its place in 1986.

A plaque on the front reads “Sir Milo Boughton Butler K.C.M.G.G.V.O. born at New Providence August 11, 1906. Married Caroline Watson and was father to 10 children, served as Vestryman, Synods man, Businessman and Politician”.

Where is the statue located?

Located in the heart of the city of Nassau in what is known as Rawson Square. The bust of sir Milo Butler is strategically placed between two Lignum Vitae trees. If you have never seen a Lignum Vitae tree, then visit the bust of Sir Milo Butler and just look left and right.

The life of Sir Milo butler is one to study and emulate as his success in life can be learned through history.
